Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is based on a series of award winning graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Filled with gaming references and popular culture they’ll appeal to every geek out there. The six volume series has been adapted into a major motion picture with Edgar Write (Director of Shaun of The Dead), Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad and Youth in Revolt) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Die Hard 4.0, Death Proof and Final Destination 3).
Basically, we’re talking about a love story. Our hero is the jobless Scott Pilgrim who is more than a little obsessed with video games. One day, Scott literally bumps the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and like all good love stories there’s one obstacle to overcome: Well, when I say one, I actually mean seven quite big obstacles. Like most modern women, Ramona has seven evil ex-boyfriends that Scott must defeat for any chance of them getting together.
In a hugely detailed and surreal film, this story should appeal to gamers everywhere but that might be it’s problem. It’s an alternative film, with an alternative soundtrack for an alternative audience which could limit it’s popularity with the mainstream.
Taking your girlfriend to see this film could backfire. Possible questions you might be asked during this film by an ungeeky person:
What’s that three triangle symbol all about?
What’s metroid?
What’s a hit combo?
I’m excited about this film. I’ve bought the graphic novels in anticipation (I’ll tell you how that went) and I’ve booked my tickets to see it when it opens on Wednsday 23rd August.
